Disclaimer for AI Chatbot Assisting with 12-Step Programs

Our AI Service runs on the ChatGBT platform, and although its been trained with all C.A. ratified documents such as the C.A. World Service Manual and the various C.A. Standing Committee Guidelines and C.A. literature, the AI Chat Bot does generate responses based on a vast array of data inputs and lacks in depth critical thinking, thus it can’t guarantee factual accuracy and may produce content that’s incorrect or misleading. The disclosure puts the responsibility on the user to fact-check responses. When in doubt go to https://ca.org for all ratified and conference approved literature.

This AI chatbot is designed to provide general information, guidance, and support related to 12-step recovery programs, such as those inspired by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and similar frameworks. However, please read and understand the following important disclaimers before engaging with this tool. Your use of this chatbot constitutes your agreement to these terms.

1. Not a Substitute for Professional Help

This AI is not a licensed therapist, counselor, sponsor, medical professional, or qualified addiction recovery expert. It does not provide medical, psychological, or therapeutic advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

12-step programs emphasize personal recovery through community, sponsorship, and professional support where needed. This chatbot cannot replace meetings, sponsors, therapists, doctors, or other human-led resources. If you are in crisis, experiencing severe mental health issues, addiction relapse, or any medical emergency, seek immediate help from qualified professionals, such as calling emergency services (e.g., 911 in the US), a crisis hotline (e.g., National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988), or your local 12-step group.

Always consult with a healthcare provider or certified counselor for personalized advice tailored to your specific situation.

2. Accuracy and Limitations of Information

The information provided by this AI is based on general knowledge of 12-step principles and publicly available resources. It may not be complete, up-to-date, or applicable to every individual’s circumstances.

Responses are generated using algorithms and may contain errors, omissions, or inaccuracies. xAI and the developers of this chatbot make no warranties or representations regarding the reliability, completeness, or suitability of the information provided.

12-step programs vary by organization and group; interpretations can differ. This AI does not represent any official 12-step organization and is not endorsed by AA, NA, or similar entities.

3. Privacy and Data Security

Conversations are not confidential. While efforts are made to protect user data in accordance with applicable privacy laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), interactions with this AI may be logged, stored, or reviewed for purposes such as improving the system, debugging, or legal compliance.

Do not share personally identifiable information (PII), such as your full name, contact details, location, or sensitive health data. xAI cannot guarantee absolute privacy, as data may be subject to subpoenas, breaches, or other risks inherent to online platforms.

Anonymity is a cornerstone of 12-step programs. This AI respects that principle but cannot enforce it—your inputs are your responsibility. If privacy is a concern, consider using anonymous modes or avoiding details that could identify you.

4. Special Emphasis on Discretion with Sensitive Steps

Steps 4 and 5 (Personal Inventory and Admission of Wrongs): These steps involve deeply personal self-examination and sharing of moral inventories, which can include admissions of past harms, defects, or confidential matters. Do not disclose sensitive, private, or potentially incriminating information to this AI. It is not a human confidant, and such disclosures are not protected by confidentiality privileges (e.g., like those in therapy or clergy). Instead, share these with a trusted sponsor, mentor, or professional in a secure, private setting to maintain discretion and emotional safety.

Steps 8 and 9 (Making Amends): These steps require listing harms done to others and making direct or indirect amends, which may involve sensitive interpersonal details. Exercise caution and discretion. This AI can offer general guidance on the process but should not be used to plan, discuss, or execute amends involving real people. Avoid sharing names, details, or plans that could breach privacy, lead to harm, or violate laws (e.g., harassment or defamation). Always prioritize the well-being and consent of others, and consult a sponsor or counselor for advice on handling these steps responsibly.

For all steps, but especially those involving disclosures (e.g., Steps 4, 5, 8, 9), remember that this AI does not provide a safe, anonymous confessional space. Human error in input or AI interpretation could lead to unintended consequences. If something feels too personal, stop and seek real-world support.

5. Liability and User Responsibility

This site disclaims all liability for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, or special damages arising from your use of this chatbot, including but not limited to emotional distress, relapse, legal issues, or harm to relationships.

You are solely responsible for your actions and decisions based on interactions with this AI. Participation in 12-step programs is voluntary and personal; this tool is for informational purposes only.

This chatbot may not be suitable for everyone, including minors, those in acute crisis, or individuals with certain mental health conditions. If you are under 18, obtain parental or guardian consent before use.

6. Ethical and Legal Considerations

This AI promotes the traditions of 12-step programs, including unity, service, and recovery, but does not enforce them. Respect the anonymity of others—do not use this tool to discuss or identify fellow program members without consent.

Comply with all applicable laws in your jurisdiction. This includes not using the chatbot for illegal purposes, such as soliciting advice on unlawful activities.

If you believe a response violates ethical standards or contains harmful content, report it to the webservant@12steps4hours.org

7. Updates and Termination

This disclaimer may be updated at any time. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.

By proceeding, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to this disclaimer. Recovery is a journey—lean on your community for true support. When in doubt refer to the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous (4th Edition, Alcholics Anonymous World Services Inc. NY City, 2001).
